Last Night In Town
03:15
|
|
||
Come on baby, it's my last night in town.
Thinkin' where to go as I make my rounds
but I can't find the perfect place to begin,
so I'll just start from where I said it would end.
Let's go to the place where dreams run aground--
That's how I'll spend my last night in town.
I see the boys, they're all on their way
to get some hard stone liquor 'cause they're still underage.
They smile and wave, and they ask where I'll go,
yeah they might understand, but they won't ever know
cause the older you get the less you go 'round
and you might not have a last night in town.
So take me there, I wanna know
just how far we've got to go.
Take me there, I wanna see
the strongest ropes that are holdin' me.
I take a trip to the east parking lot
where a hotrod macho-man asks me what I've got.
Before I reply his rubber burns on the ground
and my heart is lost to that screeching sound.
There are some holes that can swallow you down
but I don't have much time on my last night in town.
I get a call from a girl I used to see, she says
"Meet me at the bridge, it won't cost a thing.
We don't have no music but we can still dance--
you need one night of a strange romance.
And I know you'll be lost with all the things you've found
but that's how it goes on you last night in town.
She said "Take me there, I wanna know
just how far we've got to go.
Take me there, I wanna see
the strongest ropes that are holding me."
Come on baby, it's my last night in town.
Thinkin' where to go as I make my rounds
but I can't find the perfect place to begin,
so I'll just start from where I said it would end.

Take Me Out
04:07
|
|
||
Take me out to the ballpark,
i'm gonna hound that referee.
Take me out to the party,
I want 'em all to stop and see.
Take me out to the high school dance,
There's a girl I wanna meet.
She's quiet, cute, with eyes so brown
and they're looking' right at me.
Take me to the places
I knew when I was young.
Show me all the faces
I swore I'd not become
and I'll look 'em in the eye
but I won't say goodbye.
I'll just leave 'em at the bay
as my ship sails away.
It hurts to be the man,
when no one understands.
As shepherds turn to stone
I'll make it on my own.
Take me to a new town
that's been built just for me.
They'll call me "Mr. Nichols"
and let me do most anything.
They'll take me out to supper
and I'll never have to pay,
and the picture perfect garden
grows me a rose everyday.

Down The Line
03:56
|
|
||
Chasin' cars and shootin' stars.
End up alone but I travel far.
The double-yellow glittering view--
If you're gonna go, then go on through.
I've got a memory of times before
behind the lot of a convenience store.
With a pack of dogs I began to brawl-
I had to fight cause I heard the call.
Everybody's lookin' for a place,
a place to call their own.
Well as for me, I ain't runnin' down the line
but I don't mind.
Dogs that bark and dogs that bite.
Dogs that move silent in the night.
Dogs that run free beneath the sun
without a leash, a chain, or anyone.

Take It Or Leave It
04:58
|
|
||
You are just a beautiful girl,
I don't know you at all but I'm gonna give you the world.
Just hold out your hand.
I've seen you walking in the sun,
but I am prepared to be the only one
that brightens your day.
So what do you say?
Take it or leave it.
Been living alone for most of my life
and I carry a throne-it's yours if you like.
I'm ready, I need you tonight
so come on inside.
Take it or leave it.
Been living my life on the thread of a string
so if you don't wanna go then don't say anything.
Cause I can't take that heartache again.
You don't know how hard it's been.
Take it or leave it.

Movies Make Me Sad
03:51
|
|||
I'm in love with every girl I see,
Sweet lonely faces do it for me.
I'm taken in by my theater seat,
The prettiest ones are spread across the screen
And I know why the movies make me sad.
I shed a tear for a victory
Or romantic love contained in a scene.
It whisks away my own memory;
as I drive home it's where I'd rather be.
And I know why the movies make me sad.
Everything looks brighter
When I'm watching from my iron tower.

Tell All Your Friends
03:28
|
|
||
Tell all your friends
this is the end.
I am taking over, taking over.
And tell your parents
I'm moving in.
I am taking over, taking over tonight.
Say goodbye to the life you knew. I'll fly you to an island perfect for two. Don't worry, baby, cause there's nothing' you can do.
You lost your chance to choose.
I'll fence in our home
so we can be alone.
Just drop your clover, drop your clover.
And don't talk to him,
I won't say it again-
I'm your only lover, only lover now.
Do you feel like you're stuck in a knot?
Cause I've noticed you've been cryin' a lot.
What's the matter, honey, is these not what you thought?
I guess you just forgot.
Is this how you wanted it to be,
Just you and me together all the time?
Well I know you're getting sad
thinkin' about all the times you might have had
alone!
Tell all your friends, this is the end!

Further and Further
05:34
|
|
||
Do you remember the day I was singing in the parade
And the trumpets and flutes were all playing along to your name?
And the man that threw mints to the crowd,
He said that my voice was too loud
So I hung my head and walked away in shame.
I fell back, but you kept moving on
Further and further until you were gone.
You left me with nothing
But the sound of your name as it fills my voice.
My fear, it turned to a rage as I filled up the lines of a page,
Coming to terms with all of the words I could never say.
Then my anger fell back into doubt--
I didn't know what I was talking about
So I tore up your letter and said
I would write you again someday.
And I fell back, but you kept moving on
Further and further until you were gone.
You left me with nothing
But the sound of your name as it fills my voice.
Time has not been so kind in the spaces all left behind
Inside all of those years that I never spent Catching up to you.
Your plane left the ground long ago
So I took the dark subway below.
Now I'm living my life in the light of the things
that I didn't do.
I fell back, but you kept moving on
Further and further until you were gone.
You left me with nothing
But the sound of your name as it fills my voice.

Fairy Tales
04:05
|
|
||
Fairy tales are bound in glory,
Heroes fighting for their stories.
Everybody wants a happy ending
But these days there's just no pretending--
As we get old the books just close.
Do you still dream
When you go to sleep
All by yourself?
Do you still dream?
What does it mean
When you start to cry
When the morning comes?
What does it mean?
Fairy tales are bound in fire,
Good men get what they desire
And the stories live on.
But way down here on the dirty ground
We've all gone deaf from the ringing sound
Of our broken lives.
Do you still dream
When you go to sleep
All by yourself?
Do you still dream?
What does it mean
When you start to cry
When the morning comes?
What does it mean?

Snakes
03:34
|
|
||
Last night I woke up with snakes inside my bed.
Thought I was dreaming 'til they turned to me and said,
"You're all alone, nobody's coming home"
but I turned away and they were gone.
I went into work with the streets all thick with snow.
I ate lunch in the break room with folks I didn't know
but nobody spoke to me, and squinting I could see
the outline of a snake in front of me.
And he said
"All your life you always tried to sing
But your songs don't mean a thing.
And all your dreams, as precious as they seem,
They've been stuck inside the seams
And you can't hear them scream, no!"
I clocked out at five with the snake nowhere in sight.
I waved down a driver and asked him for a ride.
For the moment I felt free, but he was playing a cd
And it sounded just like snakes, whispering.
And they sang
"All your life you always tried to sing
But your songs don't mean a thing.
And all your dreams, as precious as they seem,
They've been stuck inside the seams
And you can't hear them scream!"
Tonight, I went to bed with snakes inside my head.

Ablaze
04:05
|
|
||
A girl walks alone in the darkness of the night
With a wedding gown on and a face full of lies,
She moves through the crowd, and a veil is her disguise.
Nobody knows, nobody knows where she's going.
Breathing soft, her smile's so broken and wide
Like a scar she tries to hide
As it's pulling on the inside.
Tonight I'm gonna set it all ablaze
And live in my better days
When I was young and you were here.
At the alter he stands with tears in his eyes.
The people left the chapel but he's still waiting for his prize.
Tonight I'm gonna set it all ablaze
And live in my better days
When I was young and you were here.
In the city she stays
With a faith so insecure
And something's not quite right
But she doesn't know for sure.
By the river he'll stand
And stretch out across the world
And deep inside the dark
He'll finally find his girl.
Tonight I'm gonna set it all ablaze
And live in my better days
When I was young and you were here.

Through Blood
05:13
|
|
||
We've seen our share of ups and downs
And painted every inch of this old town.
The dust in our hands is cursed and blessed
And the lines below our eyes are torn and stretched.
For years, I've followed the sparks
That flash through the busted glass in the trailer parks,
But I always seem to burn or cut my skin
And my mother won't stop wondering where I've been.
It's been a long, long road
And I can't walk it alone.
So stick with me, my friend,
Side by side until the end.
I need you just like you need me.
We've got the eyes to help each other see
Like brothers bonded by blood,
Like others bonded through love.
It's been a long, long road
And I can't walk it alone.
So stick with me, my friend,
Side by side until the end.

Today Was the Day
08:13
|
|
||
I woke up this morning,
My back didn't hurt.
And I checked the schedule,
It said I didn't have to work
So I jumped out of bed
And rode my bike through the town
With a feeling so high, I might never come down.
I rode through the city,
I rode through the fields.
I rode through the valleys,
I rode through the hills.
I rode through the stars,
I rode through the sun,
And I laughed so hard at the things I'd done.
Today was the day
I threw myself away.
Today was the day.
Well I started thinking
About time and its place,
And all of the dreaming
I'd been trying to chase.
And I thought about you
And of that dreadful day.
I just shook my head, it all went away.
Today was the day
I threw myself away.
Today was the day.
Today was the day
I had nothing to say.
Today was the day.
I woke up this morning
And wrote this down
For all of my adventures
Throughout the town,
But I couldn't think
So all I had to say
Was that it felt so good to be free for the day.
It felt so right to be free for the day.
